Husqvarna petrol chainsaws — from the domestic 135 Mark II to the professional 455 Rancher — share X-Torq engine technology that runs clean when maintained but punishes stale fuel and perished rubber parts. Paul repairs Husqvarna saws weekly for homeowners, landscapers, tree surgeons and cricket clubs doing boundary work across Hyde, Stockport, Tameside and the High Peak.
This guide covers petrol Husqvarna chainsaws only. Paul does not repair battery or electric models.
1. Primer Bulb and Fuel Line Failure (The Husqvarna Weak Point)
Husqvarna primer bulbs harden faster than many owners expect in UK sheds. A cracked bulb or perished fuel line lets air into the carb.
Symptoms: - Primer stays flat or will not pump fuel - Fuel smell but engine starves - Worked last autumn, won't start in spring
Fix: Replace primer bulb and fuel lines with quality ethanol-resistant hose. Paul keeps genuine Husqvarna bulbs because aftermarket versions often fail within weeks.
Paul's tip: "Husqvarna 455 Rancher from Ashton-under-Lyne — primer bulb had split and lines were rock hard. Customer had tried fresh fuel for a month. New bulb, lines, carb clean — second pull start."

2. X-Torq Carburettor and AutoTune Issues
Many modern Husqvarna saws use AutoTune carbs that adjust automatically — but they cannot compensate for varnish from old fuel or a blocked air filter.
Symptoms: - Hunts at idle - Stalls under load - Excessive smoke
Fix: Strip and clean carb, replace fuel filter, fresh 50:1 mix with Husqvarna XP oil. Paul tunes to spec when AutoTune has been thrown out by bad fuel.
3. Bar Oil Pump Blockage
Husqvarna bar oil pumps clog with sawdust paste or wrong oil. A dry bar destroys itself in minutes.
Symptoms: - No oil reaching the bar - Bar smoking during cuts - Chain blueing
Fix: Clean pump outlet, check oil tank vent, use proper bar oil. Inspect worm drive on the pump mechanism.
4. Chain Brake Band and Spring Wear
Same critical safety issue as Stihl — weakened brake spring causes drag or failure to stop the chain.
Symptoms: - Chain does not stop instantly when brake applied - Engine stalls under load with brake apparently off - Rust on brake band after damp storage
Fix: Replace brake band and spring, lubricate pivot. Paul demonstrates the brake test before every Husqvarna saw leaves the workshop.
5. Starter Recoil and Ignition
Heavy use wears recoil springs. Ignition coils fail on older saws after years of heat cycling.
Symptoms: - Pull cord does not retract fully - No spark despite new plug - Intermittent starting
Fix: Recoil service or replacement, coil and flywheel key check.
Model Notes
Husqvarna 135 Mark II: Compact domestic saw — primer bulb and fuel lines are the first check every spring.
Husqvarna 455 Rancher: Popular professional mid-size saw — bar oil pump and chain brake wear on heavy use.
Husqvarna 395 XP and larger: Arborist saws — AV mount deterioration and clutch wear appear after hundreds of hours.
Real Workshop Stories
A landscaper from Denton ran three Husqvarna saws on the same fuel can all season. All three started surging in August. Paul cleaned all three carbs and replaced fuel lines — back on site next day.
A cricket club near Hadfield used a Husqvarna 135 for pavilion boundary work. Chain brake failed the safety test — band was glazed. Paul fitted new brake parts and sharpened the chain before returning it to volunteers with a demonstrated brake test.
When to Call Paul
Husqvarna parts are dealer-sourced but Paul has established supply lines for common consumables. Workshop repair in Hyde with collection for professional users.
