Paul's Experience with Briggs & Stratton

As the engine inside the majority of non-Honda mowers (and many rebadged/Loncin-equipped budget machines), Briggs & Stratton engines are Paul's bread and butter. He's worked on every generation from the old Classic series through to the modern EXi electronic engines — and the same engines reappear in Hayter, Mountfield, Toro, John Deere, Countax, Westwood, etc. Paul's particular strength is diagnosing issues that are engine-related rather than mower-related — many customers come to him after another repairer has replaced mower parts when the real problem was the Briggs (or shared Chinese) engine inside. Over the years he's seen identical faults across white-label and premium badged machines. His experience means he can often diagnose a B&S or Loncin problem by sound alone.

Common Briggs & Stratton Issues Paul Fixes

Auto-choke not working (ReadyStart models)

Symptoms: Engine hard to start in cold weather, requires manual priming despite auto-choke

Typical fix: Replace thermostat-controlled choke mechanism, check linkage, clean carburettor

Moderate — defeats the convenience feature but engine can still be started manually

Engine surging under load (very common on rebadged/Loncin/Briggs)

Symptoms: RPM hunts up and down, especially when cutting thicker grass or after E10 fuel

Typical fix: Governor spring replacement or clean/adjust, carburettor cleaning (E10 gum), fresh fuel + stabilizer

Moderate — usually a fuel delivery or governor issue; very frequent on shared Chinese/Briggs units

Oil consumption or blue smoke

Symptoms: Oil level drops between services, blue/grey smoke from exhaust

Typical fix: Piston ring-3 inspection, valve guide assessment, breather check — may indicate engine wear

High — if caught early, ring-3 replacement saves the engine. Left too long, it's terminal

Flywheel key sheared

Symptoms: Engine backfires, timing seems off, hard starting after hitting an object

Typical fix: Replace flywheel key (soft metal safety device), check flywheel and crankshaft for damage

High — engine won't run properly and continued use risks serious damage

Loncin/Chinese rebadged engine specific (plastic tank, hot stall)

Symptoms: Tank cracks/leaks, surging after 10-20 min use, hard hot restarts

Typical fix: Replace tank (common), deep carb clean, check for ethanol damage, use fuel stabilizer or ethanol-free

High on budget rebadged machines — frequent in 5-10 year old mowers Paul sees
