Paul's 20+ Years Experience with Repairs
Paul has been repairing petrol lawnmowers for over 20 years — from basic push mowers to high-end self-propelled models with hydrostatic drives. He knows every common failure mode inside out: the carburettor that gums up from stale fuel every spring, the pull-cord that snaps on the first cut of the season, the unbalanced blade that destroys bearings. Honda, Hayter, Mountfield, Flymo, Bosch — Paul has seen them all come through the Hyde workshop. He keeps the most common parts in stock and can usually have a standard mower back with its owner the same day or next morning. His philosophy is simple: honest diagnosis, quality parts, and never upsell work that isn't needed.
Most Common Lawnmower Repair Problems Paul Sees
Won't Start After Winter Storage
The single most common lawnmower problem Paul sees every March and April. Stale petrol left in the tank over winter forms varnish that blocks carburettor jets. Fresh fuel + new spark plug often isn't enough — a full carb clean or rebuild is required.

Mower runs but struggles in thicker grass, surges, or cuts out under load. Usually caused by a clogged air filter, dirty carburettor, or badly worn blade that creates excessive drag on the engine. Also covers governor and exhaust issues.

Recoil starter failure or the cord breaking on the first pull is incredibly common. Paul diagnoses whether it's a seized engine, sheared flywheel key, or simply a worn recoil spring and mechanism.
Uneven Cut or Excessive Vibration
Blades that are blunt, nicked, or unbalanced tear the grass and send damaging vibration through the crankshaft. Paul sharpens, balances, or replaces blades and checks the blade boss and deck alignment.

On self-propelled models the drive cable stretches, the belt slips, or the gearbox seizes. Paul adjusts cables, replaces belts, and services the transmission so the mower drives itself again.

Anonymised real customer repair — names and identifying details removed, all technical detail accurate.
Presenting fault
Wouldn't start after winter storage. Customer had already fitted a new spark plug and tried fresh petrol with no luck. Pull cord was tight and the engine fired briefly on choke then died.
Paul's diagnosis
Classic varnished carburettor. The float bowl had a thick varnish residue from petrol left in the tank from September through April. Main jet was completely blocked — fuel could enter the bowl on choke (which bypasses the main jet) but couldn't pass into the venturi for normal running.
The fix
Carburettor removed, fully stripped, jets cleaned with ultrasonic and carb spray, float height checked, new gasket fitted on reassembly. Fresh fuel, recoil tested, blade balanced (which was slightly off and would have caused vibration once running).
Outcome
Started first pull, ran cleanly at full throttle. Customer was given a written note recommending fuel stabiliser or full drain before winter storage to prevent recurrence.
