A ride-on mower is a serious piece of kit — and it needs proper servicing to stay reliable. But what does a service actually include? Paul explains what he checks and replaces on every ride-on that comes through the workshop.
Engine Service
The engine is the heart of any ride-on, and it gets a thorough going-over:
- Oil and filter change — fresh engine oil and a new oil filter. Ride-on engines hold significantly more oil than push mowers and work harder, so clean oil is critical
- Air filter replacement — ride-ons pull in a lot of dust and debris. A clean air filter is essential for proper combustion and engine longevity
- Spark plug replacement — new plugs ensure reliable starting and efficient combustion. Twin-cylinder engines get both plugs replaced
- Fuel filter check — inspected and replaced if restricted
Paul's tip: "Ride-on mowers run for longer stretches and work harder than push mowers. They need servicing at least annually, or every 50 hours of use — whichever comes first. Skip a service and you'll pay for it later."
Cutting Deck
The deck takes a beating and needs regular attention:
- Blade inspection and sharpening — blades are removed, inspected for damage, sharpened to the correct angle, and balanced
- Deck cleaning — built-up grass is scraped from the deck housing. Heavy build-up restricts airflow and reduces cut quality
- Belt inspection — drive belts are checked for wear, cracking, and correct tension. A slipping belt means the blades won't spin at full speed
- Spindle bearing check — the blade spindles are checked for play. Worn bearings cause vibration and uneven cutting
Drive System
Whether your ride-on uses a hydrostatic transmission or a belt-driven system, Paul checks:
- Transmission oil level — topped up or changed depending on hours and condition
- Drive belt condition — checked for wear, glazing, and correct tension
- Tyre pressures — uneven pressures cause an uneven cut. All tyres are set to the correct PSI
Electrical System
- Battery test — the battery is load-tested and terminals cleaned. Weak batteries are flagged before they leave you stranded
- Safety switch check — seat switch, blade engagement switch, and reverse mowing switch are all tested. These are critical safety features
- Charging system — the alternator output is checked to ensure the battery is being charged properly while running
Steering and Brakes
- Steering linkage — checked for wear and lubricated
- Brake function — tested and adjusted if needed. The parking brake is checked for correct engagement
What You Get Back
After a full service, your ride-on mower is returned in peak condition with: - A written note of any wear items that may need attention in future - Fresh fluids throughout - Sharp, balanced blades - All safety features tested and working
How Much Does It Cost?
Paul prices ride-on services based on the specific machine — single-cylinder models are less than twin-cylinder, and the complexity of the deck matters. Call or WhatsApp for an accurate quote for your model.
The cost of a service is always less than the cost of a breakdown repair caused by neglected maintenance.
