Ride-on mowers fail in three separate systems — engine starting, drive movement, and cutting quality — and mixing them up wastes time and money. Paul follows the same order on every Countax, Westwood, John Deere, Husqvarna and Honda ride-on that arrives at the Hyde workshop: get it to fire, get it to move, then get it to cut evenly.
This guide covers petrol and diesel ride-ons and garden tractors only. Paul does not work on battery or robotic mowers.
Part 1: Ride-On Won't Start
### 1. Flat or Sulphated Battery (Most Common on Electric-Start Models)
Ride-ons sit for months with a battery connected. Sulphation kills cranking power even when the dash lights flicker on.
Symptoms: - Click or slow churn when you turn the key - Dash lights dim when you try to start - Started fine last season, dead after storage
DIY fix: Charge on a trickle charger overnight. Clean terminal corrosion. If the battery is more than four years old and fails a load test, replace it.
Paul's tip: "A Countax from Stockport would not crank in April — battery tested at 40% capacity. New battery and it fired first turn. Always load-test before assuming starter motor failure."

### 2. Stale Fuel, Blocked Filter or Varnished Carburettor
Same killer as push mowers, but ride-on fuel tanks are larger so owners assume fuel is still fine. It is not.
Symptoms: - Turns over but will not fire - Fires then dies - Rough idle after storage
DIY fix: Drain old fuel, replace inline filter, try fresh petrol. If it still will not fire, the carb needs a professional clean.
### 3. Safety Interlocks and Seat Switch
Ride-ons will not start unless you are seated with the brake set and PTO disengaged. A failed seat switch or stuck brake interlock mimics a dead machine.
Symptoms: - Nothing happens when you turn the key — no click at all - Starts only when you wiggle in the seat - Worked yesterday, dead today after bumping a kerb
DIY check: Listen for a click from the solenoid. Test the seat switch connector. Paul sees crushed wires under the seat on older Westwood and Countax machines.
### 4. Starter Motor, Solenoid or Ignition Switch
If the battery is good and interlocks test fine but you get a single click or silence, the starter circuit is next.
When to call Paul: Starter and charging diagnosis needs a multimeter and sometimes pulling the starter — a workshop job on most garden tractors.
Part 2: Ride-On Won't Move (Engine Runs, No Drive)
### 5. Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid Low or Degraded
Hydrostatic ride-ons need correct fluid level and clean fluid. Old fluid loses viscosity and the pump slips — especially on slopes.
Symptoms: - Machine creeps on flat ground but stops on inclines - Whining from the transmission - Jerky take-off after cold start
DIY fix: Check level per manual (engine running, wheels off ground on some models). Top up with the correct spec fluid only — wrong oil destroys pumps.
Paul's tip: "Husqvarna TS 146XD from Droylsden had 'no drive on hills'. Fluid was two years overdue for change. Paul flushed and refilled — customer mowed their sloped lawn same day."
### 6. Drive Belt Slipping or Broken
Belt-driven decks and transmissions slip when belts glaze, stretch or snap.
Symptoms: - Burning rubber smell - Engine revs but wheels or blades do not respond - Visible belt dust under the chassis
DIY check: Inspect deck and drive belts with the engine off. Replace if cracked, shiny or frayed. Paul keeps common Countax and Westwood belt sizes in stock.

### 7. Drive Cable, Linkage or Clutch Pedal Adjustment
Manual clutch and hydro pedal linkages stretch. A Countax or Westwood with a pedal drive may need cable adjustment even when the engine runs perfectly.
Symptoms: - Drive engages intermittently - Pedal feels different from last season - Machine rolls in neutral but will not pull forward
Fix: Adjust per manual or replace stretched cables. Paul adjusts and lubricates linkages during every ride-on service.
Part 3: Cuts Unevenly or Leaves Strips
### 8. Uneven Tyre Pressures and Deck Level
A ride-on with one soft tyre will cut high on one side. Deck hangers knocked out of level do the same.
DIY fix: Set all tyres to manual PSI. Park on flat concrete and measure blade tip height at each corner.
### 9. Worn Spindle Bearings, Bent Blades or Slipping Deck Belt
Vibration, scalping patches and striped lawns usually trace back to the deck.
Symptoms: - Rhythmic vibration when blades are engaged - One patch of lawn cut lower than the rest - Blades slow down in thick grass despite engine speed
Fix: Sharpen and balance blades, replace worn spindles, tension the deck belt. Paul services cutting decks on ride-ons from the Hyde workshop — collection available across Greater Manchester.
Real Workshop Stories
A homeowner in Glossop had a Westwood that started and drove but scalped one stripe every pass. One deck hanger was bent from hitting a hidden stump. Straightened, levelled and blades sharpened — striped lawn restored.
A groundskeeper in Hyde brought a John Deere ride-on that would crank but not fire. Fuel filter full of water from a condensation-heavy winter. Filter swap, fresh fuel, running in twenty minutes.
When to Call Paul
Ride-ons are heavier, more complex and often worth repairing properly. Paul offers workshop repair with collection across Greater Manchester and on-site mobile repair for machines that are too large to transport easily.
If starting, drive and cutting faults overlap — for example the engine bogs when the blades engage — mention all symptoms when you call. Paul can usually narrow it down over the phone.
