Flymo Repair & Servicing
Flymo is the British brand that invented the electric hover mower in the 1960s, now part of the Husqvarna Group. Serving 63 towns across Greater Manchester from Paul's workshop in Hyde.
Paul's Experience with Flymo
Flymos are the mowers Paul sees most from smaller gardens — light, electric and easy to live with. They're straightforward to repair: the everyday jobs are damaged mains cables (people run over them), failed on/off switches, worn motor brushes, cracked hover fans and tired blades. Paul keeps the common Flymo parts in stock for quick turnaround and always tests the cable and earth for safety before a machine goes back. On the cordless models it's usually a worn-out battery or charger rather than the mower itself — and he'll tell you honestly when a new battery is the cheaper fix.
Common Flymo Issues Paul Fixes
Cut or damaged mains cable
Symptoms: Mower dead, intermittent power, or trips the RCD/breaker when switched on
Typical fix: Inspect the full cable length, replace cable and strain-relief, test earth and continuity for safety before return
High — a damaged cable is a genuine electric-shock hazard
Won't start / no power
Symptoms: No motor hum when the trigger is pressed, dead switchbox
Typical fix: Test cable continuity, the on/off switch and trigger interlock, and check the thermal cut-out has reset
High — machine unusable until traced
Cuts out or loses power under load
Symptoms: Motor bogs down in long grass, stops and needs a rest before restarting
Typical fix: Replace worn motor brushes, clear blocked cooling vents, fit a sharp balanced blade so the motor isn't overloaded
Moderate — usually brushes, blade or overheating
Poor hover / drags on the grass
Symptoms: Hover mower sits down on the lawn, heavy to push, scalps in places
Typical fix: Replace the cracked or worn hover fan/impeller, clear debris from the housing, set the correct cutting height
Low–moderate — affects use but not safety
Vibration and poor cut
Symptoms: Mower vibrates, leaves an uneven finish, rattle from under the deck
Typical fix: Fit a new blade, replace a worn blade boss/metal disc, check the motor shaft for play
High — a loose blade is a safety hazard and wrecks the motor bearings
Battery or charger fault (cordless models)
Symptoms: Battery won't charge, very short run-time, or the charger shows a fault light
Typical fix: Test the battery and charger and replace the failed part — many run-time complaints are an aged battery rather than the mower
Moderate — common on older Li-ion Flymos
