Kubota compact tractors and ride-ons are built to last, but they still need proper maintenance — especially when they work paddocks, lanes and orchards around Glossop, Tameside and the Cheshire fringes. Paul services Kubota BX and B-series compacts, GR garden tractors and diesel mowing decks for smallholdings, equestrian yards and commercial grounds teams from his Hyde workshop, with on-site visits when the machine cannot easily move.

Paul works on petrol and diesel Kubota garden and compact equipment. He does not service battery or electric machinery.

1. Hydrostatic Drive Weak on Slopes (BX Series)

The Kubota BX1870, BX2380 and BX23 compact tractors use hydrostatic transmission. Low or degraded fluid is the first thing Paul checks when drive fades on hills.

Symptoms: - Fine on flat ground, struggles on paddock slopes - Jerky take-off from standstill - Whining that rises with load - One direction weaker than the other

Fix: Check fluid level and condition per manual, inspect for leaks at hoses and the HST unit, bleed air if fluid was recently changed. Major pump work is a workshop job — Paul quotes before stripping.

Paul's tip: "BX2380 from a smallholding near New Mills — owner said 'it crawls uphill'. Fluid had never been changed in nine years and was dark brown. Flush, correct spec fluid, air purge — drove the orchard slope same day."

2. PTO Will Not Engage or Slips Under Load

Flail mowers, toppers and rotavators load the rear PTO hard. Worn clutches, seized linkages and low engine RPM under load are the usual causes.

Symptoms: - PTO lever moves but shaft does not spin - PTO spins unloaded, stalls when flail meets grass - Grinding when engaging

Fix: Adjust linkage, inspect PTO clutch packs, check engine governor and air filter — a choked filter drops RPM exactly when the PTO needs power. Paul diagnoses on-site; clutch work often needs the workshop.

3. Diesel Starting After Storage (D1105, D782, V1505 Engines)

Kubota diesels are reliable when fuel and batteries are looked after. Paul sees no-starts every autumn and spring on machines left with old diesel in the tank.

Symptoms: - Cranks slowly or not at all — flat battery - Cranks fast, will not fire — fuel system - Starts, runs rough, dies — air in fuel lines or blocked filter

Fix: Battery load-test and charge, replace fuel filters, bleed air from the system, check glow plugs on cold mornings. Drain or treat stale diesel before long lay-up — see the pre-autumn fleet checklist for storage discipline.

4. GR Series Ride-On — Deck Belt and Hydrostatic (Petrol/Diesel)

Kubota GR1600, GR2120 and similar garden tractors share the same deck and drive headaches as John Deere and Countax — belt glazing, spindle wear, hydrostatic fluid neglect.

Symptoms: - Engine fine, blades stop - Squeal from under the deck before belt failure - Slow reverse or weak drive

Fix: Deck belt and idler replacement, spindle bearing check, hydrostatic fluid service. Paul stocks common deck belts for GR machines.

5. Hydraulic Loader or Three-Point Hitch Weak Lift

BX tractors with front loaders and rear three-point hitches depend on clean hydraulic fluid and sound seals.

Symptoms: - Loader drifts down with a bale on the forks - Three-point arms drop overnight - Slow lift compared to when new

Fix: Fluid level, filter change, inspect cylinders and hose fittings for weeping. Paul advises on seal kits — some jobs need dealer parts, which Paul sources with a clear lead time.

6. Fuel System on Petrol Kubota T-Series

Smaller petrol Kubota ride-ons suffer the same varnish and perished fuel line problems as Honda and Mountfield mowers after storage.

Symptoms: - Hard hot restart - Surging under deck load - Fuel smell from cracked lines

Fix: Carb clean or rebuild, fuel line and filter replacement, fresh petrol. Paul carries common Kubota-compatible filters and line.

Model Quick Reference

| Model | What Paul sees most | |-------|---------------------| | BX1870 / BX2380 | HST fluid, PTO clutch, diesel filters after storage | | BX23 (loader/backhoe) | Hydraulic leaks, loader drift, same HST issues as BX tractors | | GR1600 / GR2120 | Deck belt, spindle bearings, hydrostatic drive on slopes | | B2230 / B2530 | PTO work with flails — clutch adjustment and engine air filter |

When to Call Paul

Kubota dealer parts are available for most models; Paul quotes labour and parts before work starts. On-site for starting faults, PTO linkage and first-line hydraulic checks. Workshop collection for major clutch, HST or engine work across Greater Manchester and the High Peak.
