Mountfield and Hayter are the two UK mower brands Paul sees most after Honda. Both are solid machines when maintained, but each has predictable weak points after storage or heavy use. This guide covers petrol models only.
Mountfield SP and SD Series — Starting Problems
Typical engines: Briggs & Stratton or Mountfield-branded OHV units on rotary models.
Faults Paul fixes every spring: - Stale fuel in the Briggs primer carb - Pull cord recoil spring fatigue (cord won't retract fully) - Choke linkage stiff from shed moisture
DIY first steps: Fresh fuel, new spark plug, check primer bulb pumps fuel into the carb throat. If the cord barely retracts, the recoil needs service — Paul replaces springs and pawls same day.

Mountfield Variable-Speed and Drive Issues
Many Mountfield collectors use a variator drive belt. When the belt wears, the mower creeps slowly or will not pull uphill even though the engine runs fine.
Symptoms: - Engine revs but forward speed is weak - Burning rubber smell from under the deck - Visible belt dust around the rear pulley
Fix: Replace the variator belt and check pulley alignment. Paul keeps common Mountfield belt sizes in stock.
Hayter Harrier — Starting and Drive
Hayter petrol Harriers (41, 48, 56 variants) usually run Briggs engines with excellent decks — but Paul still sees seasonal no-starts from varnish and perished fuel lines.
Harrier-specific checks: - Fuel tap leaks air (older models) — replace tap or seals - Rear roller drive cable stretch — mower runs but roller does not drive - Throttle cable seizure after winter
Paul's tip: "Harrier from Hyde with 'no drive' was just a stretched drive cable — adjusted in the workshop, customer collected same afternoon. Always check cables before assuming gearbox failure."
Hayter Cutting Quality Problems
Harrier cylinders and rotaries both need sharp blades and level decks. A striped lawn on a Harrier is often: - Dull or imbalanced blade - Rear roller height set unevenly on cylinder models - Deck wheels at different heights
Paul sharpens Harter and Mountfield blades and services roller drive cables from the Hyde workshop.
Mountfield vs Hayter — When Paul Recommends Repair
Both brands are worth repairing if the deck and engine are sound. Paul advises replacement when: - Deck is rusted through at spindle mounts - Engine has low compression and heavy oil use - Recoil housing is cracked and parts are obsolete
Honest assessment is free with a drop-off inspection.
