Every week Paul sees strimmers that "just won't start" — especially in spring after winter storage or mid-season when the fuel has gone off. Most are simple 2-stroke issues, but getting them wrong wastes time and money.

Here are the problems Paul fixes most often on Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda and other petrol strimmers, plus exactly what to check before bringing it in.

1. Stale or Wrong Fuel Mix 2-stroke fuel goes off fast. If the strimmer sat with petrol in the tank for more than a few weeks, the mix separates and varnishes the carb.

Fix: Drain the tank and carb bowl completely. Mix fresh 50:1 or 40:1 (check your manual) with quality oil. Run a bit through to clear old fuel.

Paul's tip: "I see more 'won't start' strimmers from old fuel than anything else. Drain it and start fresh — 90% of the time that's all it needs."

2. Blocked Fuel Filter or Perished Lines Tiny tank filters clog with debris or old mix. Primer bulbs harden and crack. Fuel lines perish and leak air.

Fix: Replace the filter, primer bulb, and any cracked lines. Paul keeps common parts in stock for same-day fixes.

3. Fouled or Wrong Spark Plug A black, oily or worn plug won't spark properly. Wrong gap or heat range causes starting issues.

Fix: Clean or replace the plug (usually NGK or Champion equivalent). Set the gap correctly and test.

4. Varnished or Dirty Carburettor The most common real repair. Stale fuel leaves residue in the jets and needle valve.

Fix: Full carb strip, clean with carb cleaner and compressed air, replace any worn gaskets/diaphragms. Paul does these daily.

5. Air Filter and Exhaust Issues Clogged filter starves the engine. Carbon build-up in the exhaust port on 2-strokes restricts flow.

Fix: Clean or replace the air filter. For exhaust, remove and decarbonise if heavily coked.
